A woman and her husband, both dressed up in old and faded clothes went to a renowned institution in America to meet the principal. While they enter the room without getting permission, the secretary stopped them angrily and said ‘principal is busy’. The woman and her husband responded calmly and agreed to wait for their turn.
The secretary thought they will leave the place if they wait for a long time, so he made them wait for long. But since they waited patiently the secretary permitted them to meet the principal. The principal was amazed to see them in torn and faded clothes. Finally the lady began to speak saying ‘Our son died in an accident when he was a student of this college. He was so happy during his days in this college. So I and my husband have planned to place some memorial inside this college campus’
The principal replied saying that ‘if every died person has a memorial inside the campus then the college will look like a graveyard’. But the lady explained him ‘No! No! We are planning to build a building as a memorial’.
‘A building’ the principal was shocked. Seeing their poor attire he said ‘it would cost around 10 million dollars (50crore rupees)’. The lady has become quite so the principal thought it was a good chance to send them out. The lady then spoke to her husband saying ‘if it cost only 10 million dollars to build a building, then why don’t we build a new college’. Her husband nodded his head showing his acceptance.
They were none other than Leland Stanford couple. The college they started in California is today’s world famous Stanford University.
