One day, after nearly twenty-nine years of married life my wife reminded me of another woman I should love. That woman is no one else, that’s my mother. She lost her husband and lived as a widow for nineteen years. I could not meet him of ten because of my workload and the complusion to raise three children. That night I called my mother and asked, “Can we go out to dinner tomorrow?” she was very surprised and asked “What happened to you?”. Because my mother has a tendency to think that midnight phone calls bring bad news, I told her we should both spend some time alone. She very happily accepted that idea.
I went to her house on friday evening that week. She was ready and wore that dress she was wearing when she last celebrated her wedding day. Her face shone like an angel when she saw me. She told me she had just told her friends she was going out with her son.
We went to a nice restaurant. My mother put my hand on her and clung to her. She tried to read the menu card with great difficulty after we sat down. But, she was unable to. Because, the writing on the menu card was very small, she laughed at me, saying, “I used to read to you what was on the menu card when you were younger”. I read the menu card and told her, “I do to you today what you die to me that day” We were taking about lot of things. Time run fast afterwards, I took her to her house. At last, she asked me, “you should come when I Invite you for feast”. I also agreed.
My wife asked, “How was the party?”. I told, “was very nice”. A few days later my mother died of a sudden heart attack. A few days later, I received a letter. It came from the restaurant where my mother and I were last dining. In that letter, “I had paid in advance the money for two meals” I knew I could not attend that party. So, It was mentioned that you and your wife should come and eat happily. Seeing that made me realize how much my Mother loved me and my wife. Our eyes watered when we saw it.
During these days of Penance, we meditate on the crucifixion of the Lord. He did his duty to His mother, even though he was crucified on the verge of death (John 19:26,27). Our Lord is an example of how to love the mother. Let us also follow His footsteps and walk!
“A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother” (Prov.15:20)
“The eye that mocks his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it” (Prov.30:17)
